Rachel joined Smith Debnam’s DEI Committee shortly after joining the firm and her impact has been instrumental to the committee’s success ever since. Her motivation to join the committee stems from her genuine passion for diversity and inclusion, as she recognized the opportunity to contribute to and support the existing initiatives at the firm.

Her leadership facilitating quarterly get-togethers that encourage members of the firm to connect with individuals outside their immediate work vicinity provide an opportunity for colleagues to interact, fostering a sense of community and familiarity within the organization. Additionally, these sessions serve as platforms for open discussions on various topics related to diversity and inclusion.

Rachel is particularly passionate about ensuring a diverse and inclusive environment at Smith Debnam. As an attorney within the firm, she recognizes the importance of using her voice to advocate for those who may face challenges in expressing themselves or lack representation. Rachel firmly believes that an inclusive workplace leads to greater employee satisfaction and overall success.

She draws inspiration from her best friend, a gay man, and has witnessed firsthand the obstacles he has faced in navigating the work world. As a licensed attorney in North and South Carolina and a graduate with honors in Political Science from North Carolina State University, Rachel Rogers brings not only her legal background but also her dedication to promoting diversity and inclusion to Smith Debnam. Her role on the DEI Committee allows her to actively contribute to creating an inclusive workplace environment where all employees feel valued, respected, and empowered.

Lynn Wilson McNally is an esteemed attorney and a dedicated advocate for diversity and inclusion within the legal profession. As the past Chairperson of the DEI Committee, Lynn holds significant responsibilities within the firm. She is a member of the Firm Wide Events Subcommittee, working diligently to organize events that celebrate diversity and create opportunities for learning and understanding. Lynn is also involved in the Planning for the Next 50 Years Subcommittee, where she contributes her insights and expertise to shape the firm’s future direction with a focus on diversity and inclusion.

Within the DEI Committee, Sally’s primary focus is providing logistical support. Motivated by a desire to represent the associate attorneys at the firm and support the DEI Committee’s mission, Melissa joined the committee when there were no other associate attorneys actively involved. By doing so, she became a valuable ambassador, amplifying the voices and concerns of her fellow associates. Melissa recognized the importance of associate support in promoting diversity and inclusion initiatives, and she eagerly took on the responsibility.

Within the D&I Committee, Melissa plays a pivotal role as a co-leader of the Food Drive subcommittee. This subcommittee takes charge of organizing and facilitating the annual firm-wide food drive. Melissa’s leadership and organizational skills have been instrumental in ensuring the success of this initiative, which not only helps those in need but also fosters a sense of unity and philanthropy within the firm.

Nicholaus Shane DeLorme, known as Shane, is a committed advocate for diversity and inclusion at Smith Debnam. Since January 2022, Shane has played a pivotal role as a member of the firm’s DEI Committee, focusing on promoting inclusivity and fostering a diverse work environment.

Shane’s journey into the committee was sparked by a former member who recognized his graphic design background and approached him to assist with the newsletter. Intrigued by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact, Shane eagerly joined the committee and became the co-editor of the newsletter. He successfully revitalized this communication channel, leveraging his creativity and design skills to share important updates, stories, and perspectives on D&I initiatives within the firm.

In addition to his newsletter responsibilities, Shane actively participates in discussions, providing valuable insights and ideas to drive the committee’s initiatives forward. He ensures that diverse voices are heard and encourages open conversations on sensitive topics. Passionate about giving a voice to the LGBTQIA+ community, Shane fearlessly advocates for equality and inclusion, contributing to a more supportive and respectful work environment for all employees.

Shane’s involvement in the DEI Committee complements his role as a Database Administrator within the Consumer Collections team at Smith Debnam. He excels in automating processes, streamlining workflows, and leveraging technology to enhance efficiency. By applying his technical expertise to DEI efforts, Shane brings a unique perspective to the committee, using his skills to amplify diverse voices and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Shane finds joy in his passion for theme parks and roller coasters. As an enthusiast, he has experienced 195 unique roller coasters, a testament to his adventurous spirit and love for excitement.

Shane’s commitment to amplifying diverse voices, his technical expertise, and his passion for creating an inclusive work environment make him an invaluable asset to the committee and the firm as a whole.

Aquila Carmon is a dedicated Recovery Agent with a strong commitment to helping clients and consumers alike. With one month of tenure in the Consumer Collections department at Smith Debnam, Aquila recently joined Smith Debnam’s DEI Committee, bringing his unique perspective and commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within the organization.

Aquila holds a Diploma in Theology from the Greater Mount Zion Bible Institute and is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus on Project Management at Purdue University Global. His diverse educational background underscores his adaptability and willingness to explore new horizons.

With years of experience as a collections manager and two years as a property manager, Aquila has honed his skills in working with individuals from various backgrounds. His Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification is a testament to his commitment to efficiency and excellence in his work. In addition, Aquila is a licensed insurance agent, expanding his expertise beyond collections.

Outside of work, Aquila is passionate about financial literacy, personal budgeting, money management, and building and maintaining positive credit. He actively promotes these topics to empower individuals in managing their finances effectively. Moreover, as an ordained Minister and Pastor of a small church in Wilson, NC, Aquila leads initiatives focused on community outreach, including supporting local schools, organizing backpack drives, and providing holiday meals to families in need.

Motivated by a desire to be a voice for those who might feel unheard, Aquila joined Smith Debnam’s DEI committee approximately two weeks into his tenure with the firm. While his specific role and responsibilities within the committee are still evolving, he is eager to contribute his insights and passion to further the cause of diversity and inclusion at Smith Debnam.

Aquila is particularly passionate about highlighting the value of individuals regardless of their background, appearance, or cultural differences. His personal and professional experiences have shaped his perspective on diversity and inclusion. As a black male, he understands the emotional impact of unfounded accusations and the challenges faced by minority communities. Professionally, he has encountered the mental strain of working diligently and being overlooked or under-compensated. These experiences drive his commitment to advocating for a more inclusive and equitable workplace.

Ralph Lazaro has been an integral part of the Smith Debnam team for the past 23 years, serving as the Lead Recovery Agent in our Creditors’ Rights practice area, and more recently, taking on an important position as a member of Smith Debnam’s DEI Committee.

Motivated by the desire to promote diversity and inclusion within the firm, Ralph joined the committee with the aim of ensuring that his team’s voices are heard and represented. Recognizing the significant representation of Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and Arab individuals on his team compared to the rest of the firm, Ralph feels a strong sense of responsibility as a white cis male in a leadership position. He understands the importance of fostering an inclusive environment where every team member feels valued and included.

Passionate about various aspects of diversity and inclusion, Ralph firmly believes that everyone should be welcomed and accepted everywhere. He values the fundamental rights of every individual to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Growing up in New York City and having a diverse family background, Ralph was raised to treat everyone equally. However, he also witnessed instances where members of his own family treated people differently, highlighting the need for open conversations and understanding.

As the Director of Marketing at Smith Debnam, Patricia has played a pivotal role in driving the firm’s marketing strategies and initiatives for nearly a decade. Additionally, she is a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion and has been an integral part of Smith Debnam’s DEI Committee since its inception.

As part of the DEI Committee, Patricia’s role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities. She has been actively involved in curating the Multimedia DEI Resource Library, a valuable repository of educational materials and resources that promote understanding and awareness of diversity and inclusion issues. Patricia also spearheads our DEI surveys, meticulously analyzing and disseminating the findings to drive meaningful change within the firm.

A member of the Workplace Diversity Training subcommittee, Patricia helps identify and coordinate initiatives to enhance awareness and foster inclusivity among employees. As a member of the Firmwide Events subcommittee, she assists in setting the agenda and coordinating materials for events that bring together employees to promote understanding and dialogue. Patricia also lends her creative talents to promoting the firm’s DEI initiatives internally, including assisting with the D&I Newsletter, Screensavers, and breakroom graphics.

Patricia’s personal and professional experiences have shaped her perspective on diversity and inclusion. Growing up in a multicultural household, she has witnessed firsthand the challenges of feeling isolated and the transformative power of embracing differences. As the mother of a neurodivergent son, Patricia deeply understands and values the importance of creating an inclusive environment that appreciates and celebrates neurodiversity.

In addition to her contributions at Smith Debnam, Patricia actively participates in professional organizations such as the Legal Marketing Association, Association of Legal Administrators, and International Society of Primerus Law Firms. With her strategic marketing expertise, commitment to excellence, and unwavering dedication to diversity and inclusion, Patricia continues to make a profound impact on the success and growth of Smith Debnam, fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect for all employees.
