The moment JP Rankin enjoys most is not when clients sign their estate plan. It is what happens immediately afterward.

That sense of relief is what JP works toward every day.

Estate planning, in his view, is not about creating a binder full of documents. It is about giving families confidence that, when the time comes, their wishes will be carried out the way they intended.

That philosophy shapes every conversation he has with clients. Based in Smith Debnam’s Charleston office, JP focuses his practice on estate planning and trust administration, helping individuals and families make thoughtful decisions today that will guide and protect the people they love tomorrow. He prepares revocable trusts, wills, financial and healthcare powers of attorney, advance directives, and the beneficiary designations that connect every part of an estate plan. He also helps clients who have relocated to South Carolina update plans drafted elsewhere and advises rental property owners and business owners on structuring assets, so they transfer smoothly from one generation to the next.

His approach is rooted in conversation, not complexity. JP believes people make better decisions when they understand why they are making them, so he takes time to ask thoughtful questions, explain options in plain language, and build plans around each family’s circumstances and goals. A transparent flat-fee model removes another common source of uncertainty by allowing clients to concentrate on planning rather than watching the clock. He also works closely with financial advisors and other trusted professionals because the strongest plans are created when every part of a client’s financial life works together.

If there is one lesson JP has taken from years of helping families plan for the future, it is that life does not always wait until we are ready. That is why he encourages clients not to wait for the “right time.” Having a thoughtful plan in place allows families to spend less time wondering whether everything will be okay and more time enjoying the life they have worked to build.

Before becoming an attorney, JP built a career in business management and hospitality, where success depended on listening carefully, communicating clearly, and following through. Those lessons continue to shape his practice today. In fact, one compliment he hears most often is also the one that surprises him most: when he tells a client he’s going to do something, they know he’ll do it. To JP, that’s simply the standard people should be able to expect.

Licensed in South Carolina, North Carolina, and California, JP earned his Juris Doctor from California Western School of Law and his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is active in the South Carolina Bar, the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce, and the Charleston Preservation Society, and has volunteered through the South Carolina Bar Pro Bono Wills Clinic.

Outside the office, JP enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, adding to his record collection, following soccer, and snowboarding when he has the opportunity. He also enjoys building friendships throughout the Charleston community he and his family call home.
