RALEIGH, N.C. (October 15, 2025) – Smith Debnam is pleased to announce that attorney Melissa Tulis Smith has been elected to serve as Chair of the Litigation Section of the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) for the 2025–2026 Bar Year.
With more than 1,700 members, the Litigation Section is the NCBA’s second largest and brings together a dynamic network of litigators, judges, mediators, and legal professionals across North Carolina. The Section serves as a vital platform for continuing legal education, collaboration, and community-building among litigation-focused practitioners.
“Melissa brings an incredible combination of intellect, drive, and genuine collegiality to everything she does,” said Jerry T. Myers, managing partner at Smith Debnam. “Her leadership style reflects the values we hold dear at our firm – integrity, diligence, and a commitment to professional growth and community. We know she will lead the Section with vision and energy.”
A seasoned litigator licensed in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, Smith practices in Smith Debnam’s Consumer Collections group. She has a demonstrated track record of excellence representing creditors in complex litigation matters and is recognized in Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch and North Carolina Super Lawyers Rising Stars.
In her new leadership role at the Bar, Smith plans to focus on revitalizing member engagement post-COVID, fostering collaboration across practice areas, expanding outreach to law students, and delivering timely and relevant CLE content. She kicked off the Bar Year with a successful Pickleball Tournament in Raleigh and has plans for additional social and educational events statewide.
“It is an honor to lead a Section that I deeply respect – one that plays a vital role in the professional lives of so many of us across the state,” said Smith. “This year, we’re focusing on reconnection, mentorship, and continuing to build a vibrant, inclusive community for litigators at all stages of their careers. I’m excited for what lies ahead and grateful for the opportunity to serve.”
Smith earned her J.D. from Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law and her B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
