Raleigh, N.C. (July 16, 2020) – Smith Debnam today announced the addition of Board Certified Family Law Specialist and Certified Financial Settlement Mediator A.T. Debnam to the firm. Debnam joins Smith Debnam as a partner within the firm’s family law group. An accomplished attorney, Debnam will focus her practice representing clients in all areas of family law, including divorce and separation, annulments, prenuptial agreements, child custody and child support disputes, domestic violence cases, and negotiating marital settlements through mediation. Debnam is the daughter of W. Thurston Debnam, Jr., a partner at the firm and one of the law firm’s original founders.
Before joining Smith Debnam, Debnam worked as a divorce attorney at The Mueller Law Firm in Raleigh, North Carolina. Debnam received her undergraduate degree in 1998 from Wake Forest University and her J.D. from Elon University School of Law in 2009.
Debnam earned Board Certification as a Family Law Specialist in 2014 from the North Carolina Board of Legal Specialization. In addition to a passing a rigorous written examination, candidates for specialization must be licensed and in good standing to practice law in North Carolina; be substantially involved in the field of Family Law for a minimum of five years; acquire a certain number of continuing legal education credits in the specialty area during the three years prior to application, and demonstrate an exemplary showing of qualification in the specialty through an exhaustive peer review.
In 2018, Debnam received her mediation certification from the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission, enabling Debnam to conduct mediations of equitable distribution and other family law financial cases in North Carolina district court actions. Debnam is licensed in North Carolina and the state of Texas.
