RALEIGH, N.C. (March 10, 2026) – Smith Debnam is pleased to announce that partner Melissa Tulis Smith has been named a 2026 “Phenom” honoree by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly as part of its annual Excellence in Law awards.
The Phenom award recognizes attorneys with 10 years or less of practice who have already demonstrated significant leadership and impact within the legal profession. Honorees are selected by a panel of editorial and leadership judges based on professional accomplishments, bar leadership, community service, pro bono work, and mentoring.
Admitted to practice in 2016, Smith focuses her practice on consumer financial services and creditors’ rights litigation. She represents institutional clients in complex matters and is known for her preparation, professionalism, and collaborative approach. In addition to her legal practice, Smith serves as chair of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Litigation Section for the 2025-26 bar year, one of the largest sections of the organization. In that role, she has emphasized professional engagement, mentorship, and continuing legal education across the state.
Smith also serves on the firm’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, where she has worked to elevate associate perspectives and co-leads the firm’s annual food drive initiative, supporting both community outreach and internal engagement.
